Plot
The film deals with the unfulfilled aspirations of an everyday couple whose dreams never become reality and as they try hard to excel in life. Anilabha Gupto (Saswata Chatterjee) is a salesman who works for a company that sells antique lamps. He is dissatisfied with his job and his meagre income. His wife Jhumur (Sreelekha Mitra) works part-time in a salon and also has a dual identity as a singer in a local club. She too is unhappy with her life and urges her husband to perform better in his work field. They live in a small rented apartment with their son Rik (Anjan Mahato) who is a brilliant student but suffers from asthma.
One day, Anilabha buys an old lamp from a junk dealer for Rs. 500, hoping to sell it for a higher price. However, he soon discovers that the lamp is actually a magic lamp from which a genie emerges. The genie introduces himself as Prodeep Dutta alias Deepak Das (Rajatava Dutta), a former film star who died in a plane crash and was trapped inside the lamp for 50 years. He tells Anilabha that he can grant him any wish he wants, except for bringing back the dead or changing the past. Anilabha is initially skeptical but soon realizes the power of the lamp and decides to use it to fulfill his dreams.
Anilabha wishes for a luxurious bungalow, a fancy car, a huge bank balance and fame. He also wishes for his son to be cured of his asthma and for his wife to become a successful singer. Prodeep grants all his wishes and transforms his life overnight. Anilabha becomes the owner of Mahamaya Studio Supplies and Auction House, a prestigious company that deals with rare and antique items. He also becomes a celebrity and a socialite, hobnobbing with the rich and famous. He hires an image consultant KK (Sudarshan Chakraborty) to groom him and his family for their new lifestyle.
Jhumur also enjoys her new life and becomes a popular singer under the name Ekabali Khanna (Ekavali Khanna). She gets offers from Bollywood and even gets to meet her idol Mala Maal (Mumtaz Sorcar), a glamorous actress and the sex symbol of the nation. Rik also adapts well to his new environment and excels in his studies.
However, things start to go wrong when Anilabha becomes obsessed with his wishes and loses sight of his true self. He becomes arrogant, greedy and selfish, neglecting his family and friends. He also develops an infatuation with Mala Maal and tries to woo her, ignoring Jhumur's feelings. He also gets into trouble with Balaram Deb aka Bob Deb (Mir), an escort agent who blackmails him for sleeping with one of his girls.
Jhumur feels lonely and betrayed by her husband's behaviour and seeks solace in Prodeep, who has developed a soft corner for her. Prodeep tries to warn Anilabha about the consequences of his wishes and advises him to be careful what he wishes for. He tells him that every wish has a price and that he will have to pay it sooner or later.
Anilabha ignores Prodeep's warnings and continues to make more wishes, unaware of the dangers that await him. He wishes for Mala Maal to fall in love with him, for Bob Deb to disappear, for Jhumur to lose her voice and for Prodeep to leave him alone. He also wishes for himself to become immortal.
All his wishes come true, but not in the way he expected. Mala Maal falls in love with him, but turns out to be a psychotic stalker who tries to kill Jhumur. Bob Deb disappears, but his associates come after Anilabha for revenge. Jhumur loses her voice, but also her memory and identity. Prodeep leaves him alone, but also takes away the lamp and all his wishes. Anilabha becomes immortal, but also old and frail.
Anilabha realizes his folly and regrets his actions. He begs Prodeep to return and undo his wishes. Prodeep agrees to help him, but tells him that he will have to pay the ultimate price for his greed. He tells him that he will have to give up his life for Jhumur's sake. Anilabha agrees and sacrifices himself to save Jhumur.
The film ends with Jhumur regaining her voice and memory and singing a song dedicated to Anilabha. Prodeep returns to the lamp and waits for another master to find him.
